COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the BA Global Development with Human Geography course, you'll build a strong foundation in the principles of human geography and how they relate to global development issues. You'll explore the relationships between people, places, and processes of change like globalisation, urbanisation, and climate change. This year is designed to introduce you to key academic ideas while developing your analytical and research skills through lectures, seminars, and fieldwork. You'll also gain practical experience through local field trips and a residential field course.Modules such as Geographies of an Unequal World explore how global processes shape lives and places, and why geography is central to understanding inequality. You’ll look at how colonialism, migration, and industrialisation continue to influence the world we live in. Big Questions for People and Planet tackles major global challenges—poverty, food security, climate change—and encourages you to think critically and from multiple disciplinary perspectives.In Perspectives on Global Development, you'll explore different frameworks used to understand global inequality, including human development, neoliberalism, and decolonisation. You’ll examine how these perspectives influence policy and practice. Shared Futures focuses on how individuals and organisations—governments, NGOs, civil society—work together (or in conflict) to shape more just and sustainable futures. You'll look at the strategies and motivations behind these efforts, exploring real-world examples through case studies.
