COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of this program, students are introduced to key debates in film studies and English literature, while developing essential analytical skills for understanding various media and literary texts. This year focuses on critical reading and thinking, encouraging students to engage with influential thinkers who have shaped the literary and media landscape. The curriculum includes compulsory modules such as "Doing Film History," which covers the history of cinema from 1895 to the late 20th century, exploring technological, industrial, and socio-political changes in film. "Reading Literature in History" teaches students how to approach literature through a historical lens, while "Analysing Film" delves into film form, examining elements like mise-en-scène, cinematography, and sound. The "World Cinemas" module broadens students’ perspectives on global cinema, focusing on regional cinemas like those in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. "Writing Across Borders" explores the global spread of the English language and its impact on literature, while "Slow Reading" encourages a deep, sustained engagement with literary texts, examining how critics interpret works through various theoretical frameworks.In the second year, students deepen their understanding of film theory and begin to specialize in areas like queer literature, American film, and creative industries, with opportunities to work on projects such as scriptwriting or journalism. The "Key Concepts in Film Theory" module introduces students to various theoretical approaches to film, while "Adaptation: Cross-Media Transformations" explores how texts are adapted across different media, including film and digital platforms. The third year involves a placement module, providing students with hands-on work experience in sectors such as heritage, creative industries, or the public sector. In the final year, students refine their research skills and engage in independent study through a dissertation, specializing further in their chosen areas of interest.
