The Film and Television degree program offers a comprehensive exploration of media across four years, designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, students establish a solid foundation by studying the history, theory, and formal analysis of film and television. Modules like Analysing Film and Analysing Television introduce students to key concepts in media form and style, focusing on elements such as mise-en-scène, cinematography, and sound, alongside broader themes like gender and race. The Doing Film History module traces cinema's evolution, while Theorising Media and Digital Culture delves into media theory, helping students understand the role of media in shaping society. By engaging with global cinema in World Cinemas, students also explore the political and cultural dynamics influencing film production worldwide.In the second year, the program builds on this foundation, offering specialized modules in film and television theory, such as Key Concepts in Film Theory and Theorising Television: From Broadcasting to Streaming. These courses deepen students' critical thinking and analytical abilities, exploring topics such as feminist film theory, race representation, and the shifting dynamics of television in the age of streaming platforms. Students also have the opportunity to engage with creative or professional work through placements or projects, bridging the gap between academic study and industry practice.The third year offers a hands-on experience through a placement year, allowing students to apply their academic learning in a real-world setting, developing essential professional skills.
