COURSE CURRICULUM

This degree offers a well-rounded education in film and television, combining hands-on production skills with academic insight and industry awareness. In your first year, you’ll be introduced to core creative skills such as directing, editing, writing, and producing, as well as the basics of live and recorded television studio production. Alongside this practical work, you’ll study key debates in film and television, learning how to analyse media texts and understand the industry through both historical and contemporary lenses.In your second year, the course focuses more deeply on developing your technical and creative abilities. You’ll explore single-camera and factual video production, with an emphasis on collaboration, experimentation, and identifying your personal creative interests. This year also gives you the chance to explore specific areas such as documentary, scriptwriting, or editing, and there’s an opportunity to undertake a placement module to begin building professional experience.Your third year is spent on a work placement, allowing you to apply your skills in a real-world setting. You’ll gain valuable industry insight and develop employability skills in an area that suits your career goals, whether that’s in film production, media, creative industries, or related fields. This placement year is also supported by dedicated university staff to help you make the most of the opportunity.In the final year, you’ll focus on producing a creative project that reflects your personal interests and artistic development. You’ll also compile a professional showreel and can choose from a variety of specialist modules, such as cinematography, adaptation, digital storytelling, or working in a writers’ room. By the end of the course, you’ll graduate with a diverse skill set, a strong portfolio, and industry experience, giving you the tools and confidence to pursue a career in film, television, or the wider creative industries.
