COURSE CURRICULUM
The first year of your English Literature and Creative Writing degree will provide you with a solid foundation in both creative writing and literary studies. The course begins with two creative writing modules, which cover the essential principles of prose fiction, poetry, and scriptwriting. These modules are designed to help you develop a strong understanding of writing techniques and theories, providing you with the skills to express your ideas effectively. You will read exemplary works by contemporary writers and participate in writing exercises, honing your voice as a writer. By the end of the first year, you’ll have gained a sense of your creative identity while refining your ability to critically reflect on your work.In addition to creative writing, you will delve into the history of English Literature, examining its evolution from medieval times through to the present. The literature modules explore how English literature has developed across different historical and cultural contexts, helping you build analytical skills as you engage with various texts. By the end of the first year, you will see how your creative work can be informed and enriched by a deep understanding of literary traditions. In your second year, you will focus more on your chosen creative writing form(s), whether it’s prose, poetry, creative non-fiction, or scriptwriting. Workshops with peers and published authors will allow you to share your work and receive constructive feedback. Additionally, you will explore a range of literature modules and creative-critical modules, which combine reading and writing. A key feature of the second year is the introduction of modules that address literature written before 1789, ensuring that you appreciate the traditions that have shaped modern writing. The third year provides an exciting opportunity to gain professional experience through a placement year, allowing you to apply your skills in a real-world context. The placement year also helps to develop your employability by providing you with practical experience and valuable career insights. In your final year, the focus shifts to your creative practice, with intensive workshops designed to help you refine your work. You will also have the chance to write a creative dissertation, receiving one-on-one support from a tutor. On the literature side, you will choose from a wide range of specialist modules, giving you the opportunity to explore specific literary topics or genres, or even write a literature dissertation on a subject of your choice. This final year will be dedicated to advancing your skills and preparing you for a career in writing or related fields.
