COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Drama degree at UEA provides a thorough and immersive education, blending both practical theatre-making and critical performance studies. In the first year, students focus on developing fundamental skills in acting, collaborative theatre-making, and technical production, all within the Drama Studio. Alongside this practical experience, they explore a wide range of global performance traditions and theatre history, broadening their understanding of different cultural approaches to theatre and performance. This foundational year sets the stage for more advanced studies in subsequent years.In the second year, students build on their core skills, with a deeper exploration of the creative industries. This includes gaining insight into how theatre is made, funded, programd, and marketed. A key focus of the second year is learning about professional theatre and the wider creative sector. Students also have opportunities to specialise in specific areas of theatre, including acting, directing, technical theatre, or scriptwriting. Additionally, students can explore non-traditional performance practices and take part in internships to gain real-world industry experience.The third year offers a unique opportunity for students to apply their learning in a professional context through a placement year. This year-long placement allows students to gain valuable work experience in areas such as the creative industries, business, heritage, and public sector, building essential employability skills for their future careers. The placement is designed to help students develop their professional networks and apply the theoretical and practical skills learned throughout their degree.In the final year, students engage with advanced study and practice, focusing on themes such as performance and identity or experimental theatre. The degree culminates in a major production, where students apply all their skills to produce a fully-resourced show, further preparing them for careers in theatre, the creative industries, or further academic study.
