The BA in Creative Writing and English Literature with Placement Year at UEA offers an immersive, dynamic, and professionally focused degree that balances creative practice with literary scholarship. From the very beginning, you’ll explore the core disciplines of prose, poetry, and scriptwriting, developing your voice through writing workshops, collaborative projects, and exposure to a wide range of genres and techniques. The first year builds your foundation in creative writing alongside critical literary analysis, encouraging you to engage deeply with texts, experiment with form, and cultivate your unique writerly identity. You’ll also collaborate with students from other disciplines, broadening your creative horizons and learning how to write for different audiences.In your second year, you’ll focus more closely on your preferred form of writing, choosing from advanced modules in prose, poetry, or scriptwriting. You’ll receive detailed feedback from published authors and peers in workshop settings and may opt to study creative non-fiction or innovative creative-critical modules that fuse creative and analytical writing. Your literature modules will allow you to explore a wide array of periods and themes, including Shakespeare and pre-1789 literature, further strengthening your understanding of literary tradition and technique.Your third year is spent on a placement, offering invaluable real-world experience in sectors such as publishing, heritage, media, or the arts. This year enables you to develop transferable skills, professional confidence, and a deeper sense of your career direction.In your final year, you’ll return to UEA to focus on advanced creative projects. You’ll write a substantial piece of work in your chosen form—prose, poetry, or script—under the guidance of a dedicated tutor. You can also explore publication, performance, and a range of specialist literature modules.
