COURSE CURRICULUM
The journalism degree provides a comprehensive, hands-on education structured across four years, each building on the last to develop the skills, knowledge, and professional mindset needed for a successful career in the media industry. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamentals of journalism, learning how to find, research, and create news stories using text, audio, and video. They develop technical proficiency in professional camera and audio equipment and receive foundational training in media law, ethics, and regulation. Modules focus on multimedia storytelling, audiovisual skills, and understanding the broader media industries. In the second year, students take on more complex journalistic challenges, such as investigative reporting and ethical decision-making. Practical learning intensifies through 15 newsdays simulating real newsroom experiences and workshops that enhance production and reporting skills. They deepen their understanding of media law and public affairs, while also preparing for professional placements through a non-credit module that supports career planning and industry networking. The third year is spent on a full-time placement, offering invaluable professional experience in a relevant field, supported by the university’s staff and career services. This placement helps students apply their academic learning to real-world contexts, sharpening their practical skills and preparing them for future employment. In the final year, students return to complete advanced modules, including the production of long-form content like documentaries and an extended journalism project. They undertake another round of newsdays, this time with greater independence and complexity, and reflect on their placement through a formal report. A module on diversity, gender, and inclusion challenges students to embed inclusivity into their storytelling, a vital skill in today’s evolving media landscape. Across all years, voice coaching supports students' broadcast readiness, and the curriculum combines academic insight with practical, industry-relevant experience to ensure graduates are job-ready and well-rounded.
