COURSE CURRICULUM

The American History degree offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary exploration of the United States, blending political, cultural, and social perspectives across four structured years. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in U.S. history, from the formation of the Constitution to the Cold War, while developing essential academic skills in historical analysis and critical thinking. Modules such as Introduction to American Studies and 20th Century American History explore pivotal events like industrialisation, the Civil Rights Movement, and America’s global rise, while Doing History and Rights & Wrongs provide key methodological and theoretical tools for historical interpretation. The second year introduces a more thematic and analytical approach, allowing students to specialise through modules like The Politics of Storytelling and The Politics of American Visual Culture, which examine the role of narrative, identity, and representation in shaping American society. These modules also draw from a range of disciplines including literature, film, political theory, and visual culture, encouraging students to understand history through multiple lenses. The third year is spent on a placement, giving students invaluable real-world experience and the opportunity to apply academic knowledge in a professional setting. This year supports personal development, employability, and a clearer understanding of potential career paths across sectors such as heritage, education, public service, and the creative industries. In the final year, students return to their studies and focus on independent research, culminating in a supervised dissertation that allows them to explore a chosen topic in depth.
