COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the degree, students build a foundation in two chosen languages and are introduced to translation theory and intercultural communication. They take compulsory modules in French, Spanish, or Japanese, with different learning pathways based on prior knowledge and experience. These language modules focus on developing receptive and productive skills—listening, reading, speaking, and writing—through interactive seminars and practical exercises using real-life media such as videos and songs. Students also study introductory modules on translation studies and on language, culture, and identity, exploring key ideas about intercultural communication and the specific histories and societies of French-, Spanish-, and Japanese-speaking regions. In the second year, students continue advancing their language proficiency and begin applying translation across different media while exploring optional modules on subtitling, dubbing, and media in a globalised world. Language study remains core, now emphasizing practical skills and preparing students for their year abroad, especially through context-specific simulations and exercises. The third year is spent abroad in countries where the target languages are spoken, through study placements or work experiences that deepen cultural immersion and fluency. Students return for their fourth year to complete advanced translation modules in both directions between English and their target languages. They also have the opportunity to explore interpreting, media accessibility, and professional translation techniques in a range of genres such as technical, literary, journalistic, or audiovisual texts. These final-year modules emphasize real-world application, collaboration, and critical reflection, preparing students for careers in translation, interpreting, and other global communication roles.
