COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of language studies, you’ll build a strong foundation in language, culture, and intercultural communication. You’ll develop key skills in understanding and analyzing language and culture, including areas like translation, sociolinguistics, cultural theory, and intercultural communication. You will also start learning or further developing your language skills in French, Spanish, or Japanese, with modules tailored to different levels of language proficiency. These modules focus on enhancing your ability in both receptive skills (listening, reading) and productive skills (speaking, writing). Language courses are taught interactively, often through pair work, group activities, and class discussions, enabling you to improve your communication skills in practical, real-world contexts. Along with language learning, you will engage with modules that introduce you to important theoretical themes, such as language and communication studies, and the study of identity and culture. These modules will also help you develop essential academic skills like writing and referencing, which will support your learning throughout the degree. In addition, you’ll have the chance to explore aspects of the cultures where your chosen language is spoken, whether it's French, Spanish, or Japanese. These early modules are designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of both the language and the cultural context, setting you up for more advanced studies in the years to come.
