COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Relations and Modern Languages degree at UEA offers a well-structured and immersive academic journey that balances political theory and global issues with in-depth language training. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of international relations, tackling major topics like war, migration, global justice, and emerging powers, while also studying a chosen modern language—French, Spanish, or Japanese. Modules such as “Understanding Politics Today” and “Worldbuilding” offer insights into both current political challenges and the historical evolution of global systems. Alongside these, language modules begin at a tailored level based on prior experience, providing a highly interactive environment to build confidence and practical communication skills. In Year 2, students dive deeper into political theory, engaging with contrasting ideological perspectives through the module “Analysing International Relations,” while continuing language study at a more advanced level. The year also offers flexibility for students to begin focusing on specific regions or themes of interest in global affairs. The third year is spent abroad, giving students a chance to fully immerse themselves in the culture and language of their chosen region. Whether studying at a partner university or working abroad, students develop independence, adaptability, and a deeper cultural understanding. Finally, Year 4 brings together the knowledge and skills gained across the degree. Students complete a dissertation or group research project in politics or international relations, while simultaneously refining their language proficiency to an advanced, professional level. Modules in the final year focus on applying language skills in real-world contexts, such as translation, academic writing, and public speaking, all conducted in the target language. By the end of the course, students are not only equipped with deep political insight but also with linguistic and intercultural competence, preparing them for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, media, translation, or further academic research.
