COURSE CURRICULUM

The American History degree offers a dynamic and comprehensive journey through the political, cultural, and social development of the United States, providing students with critical tools to understand both the past and its relevance to the present. In the first year, students are introduced to foundational topics spanning from the late 18th century to the Cold War. Modules such as Introduction to American Studies I and II, and Introduction to 20th Century American History, explore how key events and movements—like the Civil Rights Movement, industrialisation, and the Cold War—continue to shape American identity. These are supported by broader modules like Rights & Wrongs and Doing History, which develop essential research and analytical skills while introducing students to major social and political theories and historical methodologies.In the second year, the degree becomes more thematic, allowing students to explore their interests in greater depth. Compulsory modules like The Politics of Storytelling and The Politics of American Visual Culture challenge students to consider how narratives and visual media have constructed, and continue to reinforce, societal power dynamics. This focus on representation and identity is vital in understanding how race, gender, and sexuality have been portrayed and politicised throughout American history.The third year is spent abroad, typically in North America, offering an immersive experience that deepens students’ understanding of American culture and academic practice. This international perspective enriches both their academic and personal development. In the final year, students return to complete a dissertation, conducting independent research on a topic of their choice under the guidance of a supervisor. The dissertation is an opportunity to synthesise the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the degree and produce a piece of original scholarly work. Overall, this degree equips students with a nuanced understanding of American history while developing transferable skills in research, critical thinking, and communication.
