COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Politics and International Relations offers a comprehensive and dynamic exploration of contemporary political life, both in the UK and globally. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in political theory, institutions, communication, and global politics, exploring key ideologies such as liberalism, conservatism, feminism, and socialism. Modules examine the evolution of political systems, the role of the media in shaping public discourse, and the complexities of global order and justice. In the second year, the focus shifts to developing analytical and research skills through comparative political analysis and training in both qualitative and quantitative methods. Students explore how different governments operate, how democracies function under pressure, and how states respond to challenges such as populism, misinformation, and climate crises. The third year provides the opportunity for a placement, enabling students to gain practical experience and apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings such as government, NGOs, media, or advocacy. In the final year, students either write a dissertation or take part in a group research project, allowing them to specialise in a topic of their choice and showcase their independent research skills. Overall, the degree equips students with a deep understanding of political systems, critical thinking abilities, and practical experience that prepares them for careers in politics, diplomacy, journalism, public service, and beyond.
