COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of the Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree, students build a foundational understanding across the three disciplines through a set of core modules. They explore key concepts in microeconomics and macroeconomics, learning how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions and interact within economic systems. Alongside this, students are introduced to the role of political ideologies and institutions, as well as the evolving landscape of global politics and political communication in the digital age. The philosophical component focuses on social transformation, engaging with influential thinkers such as Fichte, Marx, Freire and Dewey to examine how philosophy can drive real-world change. In the second year, students deepen their analytical skills through intermediate modules in microeconomics and macroeconomics, focusing on decision-making under uncertainty and the functioning of markets and policies on a broader scale. They critically examine concepts of power, freedom and democracy, and explore how historical ideas continue to influence contemporary political institutions and ideologies. The final year offers students the opportunity to specialise further by choosing from a wide range of optional modules and conducting independent research in the form of a dissertation, policy paper or consultancy-style project. A compulsory module in ethics allows them to engage deeply with both theoretical and practical moral questions, equipping them with a nuanced understanding of the ethical dimensions of social and political life. Throughout the course, students develop a blend of theoretical insight and practical skills that prepare them for a wide variety of career paths or further academic study.
