COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the Philosophy and Politics course, students follow a structured program that provides a balanced foundation in both disciplines. The first semester introduces core concepts in philosophy through the exploration of profound questions like the meaning of life, while politics modules examine fundamental political theories and current global developments. In the second semester, students study how radical ideas have shaped modern political and social thought and are given flexibility to choose two additional modules based on their interests, either within the main subjects or from a wider interdisciplinary selection. Core modules in this year include explorations of personal and political identity, foundational philosophical readings, social transformation, and contemporary political issues from a global perspective. In the second year, students are able to tailor their academic path more closely to their personal interests and strengths, choosing from a wider range of modules that deepen their understanding of existential thought and political theory. Two core modules anchor this year: one examining the historical evolution of political ideas and the nature of power, and another that analyses the challenges facing modern states and political institutions. Students may also take elective modules outside their main discipline and even choose a placement module to gain real-world experience and test potential career paths. In the third year, students enter an advanced stage of study, selecting specialised modules and engaging more independently with philosophical and political ideas. They may focus more heavily on one subject, maintain a balanced approach, or expand into related disciplines. This year also includes a substantial research project in the form of a dissertation, which is supported by individual supervision and allows students to synthesise their learning through a focused investigation into a topic of their choosing. Themes explored during this year may include climate justice, gender and power, and the philosophical foundations of liberal societies, all designed to challenge students to think critically and independently about pressing contemporary issues.
