COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the History degree, students build a strong foundation in British, European, and global history through a set of core modules. These span from the Medieval era to the 20th century and introduce key themes such as state formation, religious conflict, gender, industrialisation, and nationalism. The course also explores modern global issues like decolonisation, climate change, and ethnicity since 1914. Modules like Doing History provide a practical introduction to historical methodologies, encouraging students to think critically about the role of history in today’s world. The Age of Extremes module broadens global understanding by covering events like world wars, revolutions, and social progress, examining them through a wide lens that includes healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights, and global inequality.In Year 2, students have the freedom to customise their studies. With no compulsory modules, they can choose from a broad selection of topics, from Middle Eastern history and propaganda to heritage studies and America’s international influence. The flexibility encourages deeper exploration of personal interests, supports interdisciplinary learning, and offers the chance to study abroad or take language courses.In the final year, students specialise further by selecting focused modules or completing a dissertation. Topics typically include areas such as Japanese history, the French Revolution, or war and appeasement, taught by academics engaged in active research. This final year helps students refine their analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers or further study.
