COURSE CURRICULUM

The Liberal Arts degree at UEA is structured to encourage intellectual exploration and the development of interdisciplinary thinking from the very beginning. In the first year, students are introduced to a wide range of theories, methods and perspectives across the arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The aim is to challenge and expand students’ approaches to knowledge by encouraging them to think across traditional subject boundaries. A core module, “Ways to Knowledge: Disciplines and Practices,” forms the foundation of this process, using extended case studies to explore how different disciplines interact and contribute to understanding complex global themes. Alongside this, students begin to shape their own academic journey by selecting from a wide variety of modules to form a major and minor pathway, giving them the flexibility to tailor their studies to their interests.In the second year, this interdisciplinary approach continues and deepens. Students take another core module, “Bodies of Knowledge: Interdisciplinarity in Practice,” which is designed around collaborative problem-solving and real-world challenges. Working in teams and guided by external consultants and faculty, students apply their cross-disciplinary skills to produce innovative solutions to contemporary issues. This practical experience reflects the kind of work students may undertake after graduation. They also continue to develop expertise in their chosen major and minor subjects, building both depth and breadth. A semester abroad is available in the spring, offering students an opportunity to experience different academic cultures and enhance their global outlook.In the final year, students bring everything together in a substantial research project, tailored to their own interests and career aspirations. This capstone element reflects the diverse learning journey each student has taken and showcases their ability to apply interdisciplinary knowledge with independence and originality.
