COURSE CURRICULUM
In the first year of the International Relations degree, students begin by developing a solid foundation in global politics through core modules that introduce essential concepts such as sovereignty, international anarchy, the balance of power, and global security. They explore how international systems have evolved over time and why the modern world is structured around nation-states. Modules also focus on the dynamics of power, conflict, and cooperation in international affairs. Students are encouraged to think critically about major political challenges such as populism, climate change, and digital governance. A unique element of the first year is the introduction to political communication, examining how political actors use media to influence opinion and power structures, and how communication shapes both national and international politics. In the second year, students begin to specialise by engaging with key theoretical approaches including realism, liberalism, Marxism, feminism, constructivism, and postcolonialism. These frameworks help students interpret global events and systems through different lenses. Alongside this, they develop essential research skills, learning how to design and conduct qualitative and quantitative studies, such as interviews, surveys, and data analysis. This year also offers the opportunity to study abroad, providing an international perspective and a deeper understanding of global politics in different cultural contexts. In the third year, students become more independent in their learning. With academic support, they conduct their own research projects or dissertations on topics of their choice, demonstrating their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world issues. The year also includes opportunities for internships or work placements, allowing students to gain valuable professional experience. By the end of the degree, students have developed a deep, critical understanding of international relations, along with practical skills in research, communication, and analysis that prepare them for careers in politics, diplomacy, journalism, policy-making, or further academic study.
