COURSE CURRICULUM

Over the three years of the International Relations and Politics degree at UEA, students are taken on a progressive academic journey that begins with a broad foundation in political theory and global issues, then deepens through the study of key institutions, ideologies, and research methods, before culminating in an independent research project or dissertation. In Year 1, the curriculum introduces major debates and themes in politics and international relations, such as democracy, war, conflict, security, gender, migration, and environmental politics. Students explore foundational political theories and concepts in modules like "Rights & Wrongs" and "Understanding Politics Today," while modules like "Power, (Dis)Order & Security" and "Globalisation, Governance and Justice" offer critical insights into international systems and contemporary global challenges. In Year 2, the program builds on this foundation by introducing more specific theoretical frameworks and practical research methods. Modules such as "Analysing International Relations" provide exposure to major schools of thought including realism, feminism, and postcolonialism, while "Introduction to Data Analysis" equips students with essential quantitative and qualitative research skills like interviewing and computerised data analysis. Students also gain a comparative understanding of political institutions and state structures in the module "States, Institutions and Citizens," which explores global democratic challenges and policy debates. By Year 3, students are expected to apply their accumulated knowledge and skills in an extended independent project. They can choose between writing a dissertation or collaborating on a group research project, both of which require deep engagement with political theories and real-world issues. This final year not only solidifies their academic development but also helps prepare them for a wide range of career paths or further study in politics, international relations, or related fields. The program offers a dynamic blend of theory, practice, and critical thinking, encouraging students to become reflective and informed global citizens.
