COURSE CURRICULUM

This history degree begins with a strong foundation in key historical periods and methodologies. In your first year, you’ll explore British, European, and global history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Modules introduce you to medieval, early modern, and modern history, focusing on themes such as religion, gender, conflict, and state formation. You’ll also gain practical skills in historical inquiry through the Doing History module, which trains you to critically engage with primary sources and understand how historians construct narratives about the past. Alongside your core studies, you’ll develop essential research, analysis, and communication skills through the Key Skills program.In the second year, the structure becomes fully flexible, allowing you to tailor your studies to your interests. You can choose from a broad selection of modules covering a wide range of regions and periods, including Roman, American, Indian, Japanese, and East Anglian history. You may also take the opportunity to study abroad, learn a new language, or explore interdisciplinary modules from across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.Your final year focuses on specialised subjects that have sparked your interest throughout your degree. You’ll take part in seminar-based learning through Special Subject modules or undertake an independent dissertation, working closely with an academic expert. Selected modules include field trips to bring history into real-world contexts, with past visits to places like Westminster Abbey, Blickling Hall, and the Churchill Archives. This final year is all about refining your independent research abilities, critical thinking, and professional communication skills. You’ll continue to receive dedicated support from the university’s academic and student services to help you thrive during your studies and as you prepare for your future career.
