This interdisciplinary degree in film and history offers a comprehensive exploration of visual culture and historical knowledge across four years of study starting in the first year students are introduced to foundational skills in film analysis and historical interpretation they examine the evolution of film from 1895 through the twentieth century and engage with key historical transformations in europe and britain during the modern period modules such as doing film history and introduction to modern history help build a solid base for understanding both cinematic form and socio-political change students learn to analyse mise-en-scène cinematography editing and sound while also exploring how visual and material sources like photographs and films function as historical evidence the concept of world cinema is also explored emphasizing global film traditions and their cultural political and aesthetic impact in the second year the program moves into more complex topics such as propaganda and key concepts in film theory students study how propaganda operated across different political systems in the twentieth century and learn to apply theoretical frameworks including feminism psychoanalysis genre theory and postmodernism to film analysis this year also provides opportunities for specialisation and professional placements allowing students to apply their academic skills in real-world settings the third year continues this intellectual deepening with a focus on memory and representation students consider how history is remembered interpreted and visualised through various media forms in modules like contesting the past they examine how individuals and societies commemorate the past often in conflict with official narratives researching contemporary media cultures equips students with advanced research skills necessary for academic work and future employment throughout the degree the integration of film and history enables students to critically engage with how stories are told remembered and constructed shaping not only collective memory but also the cultural and political landscapes we navigate today
