COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of your Global Development program, you’ll build a strong foundation in understanding the complex issues of development. The core modules will introduce you to key topics such as poverty, inequality, climate change, food security, and conflict. One of the central modules, Big Questions for People and Planet, will encourage you to think critically about these issues, exploring themes like sustainable industrial development, global living standards, and social inequality through an interdisciplinary and intersectional lens. Additionally, the Perspectives on Global Development module will expose you to various theoretical frameworks in development, including human development, neo-liberalism, and decolonisation. This will help you understand the different approaches to development policy and the critiques that challenge current systems. The Shared Futures module will give you the opportunity to analyze how different institutions, such as states, social movements, and the private sector, shape the future of the planet, especially in the context of poverty, environmental degradation, and injustice.In Year 2, you will continue to expand your knowledge of global development by taking optional modules focused on regional, thematic, or disciplinary topics. These modules will allow you to broaden your engagement with development issues, while also honing your social research skills through methods courses. This year provides an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned and gain more specialized insights into global challenges.By Year 3, you will have the chance to focus more on your own academic interests. You can choose from a wide range of specialized modules to deepen your understanding of critical development issues. This year also emphasizes employability and independent study, offering you the opportunity to complete a dissertation, where you can conduct research on a topic that truly interests you and contributes to the field of global development.
