COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the BA Global Communication with Business Management course, students are introduced to the foundational principles of both intercultural communication and the dynamic world of business. The structure of this year allows for a balanced mix of compulsory and optional modules, giving students the chance to tailor their academic journey while gaining essential skills for future success. The compulsory modules introduce key business concepts, such as how organisations respond to environmental challenges, with a focus on sustainability, globalisation and corporate responsibility. Students also begin to explore critical areas of communication through modules like Introduction to Language and Communication Studies, where they are exposed to fields such as translation and second language acquisition, while developing essential academic skills like referencing, teamwork and critical reflection. In Media Representation in a Global Context, students analyse how various social groups are portrayed in the media and learn to engage with contemporary academic theories, while Language, Culture and Identity offers a deep dive into intercultural understanding, encouraging students to explore the politics, traditions and societal structures of Japan, Spain or the French-speaking world. The Introduction to World Languages and Cultures module further supports this development by introducing key analytical approaches to studying language and culture, such as sociolinguistics and cultural theory. Altogether, Year 1 provides students with a comprehensive toolkit to succeed in more specialised modules in later years, while fostering their ability to analyse, collaborate and communicate across cultures. The curriculum is designed not only to support students' academic progress but also to build their confidence in working with complex global issues and diverse cultural perspectives. This foundational year sets the stage for deeper engagement with global communication and business topics, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in international, multicultural contexts.
