In the first year of the Film and Television degree program, you will establish a strong foundation in the history, theory, and critical analysis of film and television. You will explore the evolution of these media, from their origins to contemporary times, focusing on how technological advancements have shaped the industry. Key modules such as Analysing Film and Analysing Television will introduce you to the formal elements of film and TV, such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, and sound, while addressing broader concepts like gender, race, and modernity in media. Additionally, Doing Film History will take you through the major milestones of cinema history, helping you understand the historical, technological, and cultural forces that have shaped the medium. Theorising Media and Digital Culture will immerse you in key theoretical perspectives on media, while World Cinemas will expose you to a range of global film traditions, emphasizing their cultural, political, and aesthetic significance. Finally, Television History focuses on the development of television, with special attention to British TV and its historical impact on society and culture.In the second year, you will dive deeper into more specialized themes. Modules such as Key Concepts in Film Theory and Theorising Television: From Broadcasting to Streaming will provide you with critical theoretical tools to engage with the evolution of film and television. You will explore various theoretical approaches, including feminist film theory, race representation, genre, and the impact of streaming platforms. This year also offers opportunities for hands-on learning, such as placements in media companies, where you can gain practical experience in the field.The third year is dedicated to a placement year, where you will gain practical work experience related to your field of study. You will apply the skills and knowledge you have developed during your first two years while building valuable industry connections. In your final year, you will engage in advanced research projects, including a dissertation if you choose, allowing you to explore a topic that inspires you in depth. Modules such as Researching Contemporary Media Cultures will further refine your research and critical thinking skills, preparing you for a successful career in film and television.
