COURSE CURRICULUM

In Year 1 of the English Literature with Creative Writing degree, students establish a strong foundation for both creative and academic development. The program combines Creative Writing modules, which introduce students to prose fiction, poetry, and scriptwriting. In the first semester, students study these forms through the analysis of contemporary texts and hands-on writing exercises. The second semester encourages students to experiment with avant-garde techniques and explore different genres, while also developing the critical skills to reflect on their writing practice. This combination of theory and practice helps students discover their own writing voice and refine their craft.On the literature side, students engage with a variety of texts from different historical periods. The module "Reading Literature in History" teaches students to read literature through a historical lens, examining how literature has interacted with its cultural and historical context. "Reading Now" focuses on close reading and the critical analysis of texts, while "Slow Reading" allows students to delve deeply into one text, examining it from multiple critical perspectives. The "Writing Across Borders" module explores the global spread of English, examining how the language has evolved and been used across different cultures and regions.In Year 2, students specialize in one or two forms of creative writing, such as prose, poetry, or scriptwriting. Workshops allow students to share their work with peers and receive feedback, helping them refine their writing. Literary modules continue to be a key part of the program, and students are introduced to literature from different historical periods. They also focus on literature written before 1789, ensuring they gain a deep understanding of the literary traditions that influence their work.In Year 3, students focus on their creative projects, with the option to write a dissertation in creative writing or literature. This final year allows students to develop their craft further with one-on-one support from tutors, preparing them for professional writing or further academic study.
