COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first year of study, you will be introduced to both philosophy and literature through a balanced approach that emphasizes critical reading and analysis. The curriculum provides a broad overview of literary history, beginning with the Middle Ages and extending to modern times, while exploring philosophical perspectives on human nature that have shaped both Western and Eastern traditions. The focus will be on developing key academic skills such as close reading, critical thinking, and the ability to analyze texts from both literary and philosophical viewpoints. You will engage with foundational philosophical works, including texts by Plato, Aristotle, and other notable thinkers, while also exploring the meaning of life through a range of philosophical perspectives. Literature modules will focus on understanding the role of reading in shaping our thoughts and interpreting texts, with a particular emphasis on close reading and the political and moral significance of literature. This year sets the groundwork for the interdisciplinary approach you will develop throughout your degree, stimulating both your creativity and your ability to engage critically with complex ideas. In the second year, the program deepens your exploration of both subjects. You will begin to examine the relationship between literature and philosophy more closely, focusing on how both fields approach existential questions about human existence, the divine, and the meaning of life. Modules such as Literature and Philosophy will allow you to study how literary works can both reflect and challenge philosophical ideas, while Philosophy Meets the Arts will examine the connections between aesthetics, art, and philosophical thought. As you progress, you will have the opportunity to specialize in areas such as existentialism, critical theory, or aesthetics, while also considering practical applications of your learning, such as through a placement module designed to connect your academic studies with real-world experiences. The second year helps you refine your interdisciplinary approach while deepening your understanding of both philosophy and literature.
