COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Education degree provides a comprehensive and progressive understanding of educational theory, research, and practice. In Year 1, students establish a solid foundation in key disciplines—sociology, psychology, history, and philosophy—that underpin education. These perspectives help students examine how education functions in modern society and connect theoretical ideas to global contexts and technological advancements. Modules such as Studying in Higher Education, Educational Theory and Practice, Global Education, and Digital Learning and Society develop critical academic skills like reflection, research, writing, and collaboration. In Year 2, the program builds upon this foundation by introducing students to more specialised areas, including educational psychology and teaching practices in varied settings. The core modules focus on understanding the role of teachers, how students learn, and the fundamentals of educational research. Research and Learning from Experience allows students to bridge theory and practice through 40 hours of hands-on experience, while other modules like Educational Psychology and What Is Teaching? deepen knowledge of how educational practices affect learners in different contexts. Students also begin to tailor their learning by choosing from a range of elective topics such as youth studies, special educational needs, and outdoor education. By Year 3, the focus shifts to applying educational knowledge in meaningful and career-relevant ways. Students undertake an independent dissertation project under academic supervision, applying their research skills to a topic of their choice. The module Motivation in Teaching and Learning explores psychological approaches to encouraging learner engagement, further equipping students for future work in education. Elective modules continue to allow specialisation, and students are supported in preparing for postgraduate study, teacher training, or alternative professional pathways. Across all years, the program encourages critical reflection, independent learning, and practical engagement, helping students grow into well-rounded educational professionals.
