COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Education degree offers a rich, interdisciplinary journey through the theory, practice, and social context of education. In Year 1, students establish a strong academic foundation by exploring core educational concepts through sociological, psychological, historical, and philosophical lenses. Modules introduce key debates in global education and the impact of digital technologies, while also building essential academic skills in research, reflection, and writing. All students undertake the same modules, allowing the flexibility to transfer to specialist pathways after the first year. In Year 2, the course focuses on early childhood development and the transitions from childhood to youth, grounded in both theory and real-world educational settings. Students complete 40 hours of practical experience, connecting classroom learning to professional contexts, and gain hands-on training in educational research methods through qualitative and quantitative approaches. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning, exploring areas such as special educational needs, outdoor learning, and educational psychology. In the final year, students deepen their understanding of childhood as a socially constructed concept, exploring the influence of culture, politics, and media on perceptions of children and education. The year also centres on an independent research dissertation, offering the opportunity to investigate an educational topic of personal or professional interest under academic supervision. This research project strengthens analytical, methodological, and written communication skills. Students further customise their learning through optional modules exploring topics like mathematics, language learning, and contemporary educational debates. Throughout the degree, there is an emphasis on critical thinking, independent learning, and transferable skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and presentation—all of which prepare graduates for diverse career paths. Whether continuing into a PGCE, further academic research, or professional roles in policy, youth work, or education-focused organisations, students graduate with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to make a meaningful impact in the field of education.
