COURSE CURRICULUM

The journalism degree is structured to provide a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of the field. In Year 1, students are introduced to the core skills required for modern journalism, including writing for television, radio, and online platforms. They learn to create multimedia stories, work with professional equipment, and develop their own personal websites to showcase their work. Students also delve into media law, ethics, and regulation, ensuring they understand the legal responsibilities of journalists. Practical modules such as Audio Visual Skills 1 and 2 focus on teaching the technical aspects of shooting, recording, and editing content. In Year 2, students refine their skills further by engaging in real newsroom environments during 15 “newsdays,” where they work in teams to produce journalism across various media formats. This year focuses on investigative journalism, ethics, and public affairs, with an in-depth study of media law and regulation. Students are also supported in securing work placements in the media industry, which further enhances their practical experience. In Year 3, students complete a work placement, gaining hands-on experience in the industry. They continue to work independently during advanced newsdays and are tasked with completing major journalism projects such as long-form pieces and documentaries. The focus is on applying everything learned during the previous years in a professional setting. Additionally, students study diversity and inclusion in journalism, learning to create inclusive and representative media content. By the end of the degree, students are expected to be proficient in various forms of journalism, from writing and reporting to multimedia production, with a strong portfolio and professional work experience to prepare them for a career in the media industry.
