COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-registration) programme provides students with a comprehensive education that combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional experience to prepare them for registration and practice as occupational therapists. During Stage One, students explore the scientific foundations, philosophies and theories that underpin occupational therapy practice and learn how to apply these concepts to real-life situations involving individuals, families and communities. Modules such as Foundations for Professional Practice and Occupational Beings and Occupational Performance develop an understanding of human occupation, health, wellbeing and the role of occupational therapy in supporting participation in everyday activities. Evidence Based Practice, Research and Quality equips students with the ability to critically evaluate research and apply evidence to improve practice and patient outcomes, while Mandatory Training and Practical Skills for Practice develops the essential clinical competencies required for safe and effective professional practice. The Assessments and Interventions module introduces students to a range of assessment methods and therapeutic approaches used to support people with physical, mental health and social care needs. Practice-based learning forms a central component of the programme, with Placement 1 and Placement 2 providing valuable opportunities to integrate academic learning with professional experience in real healthcare and community settings. Students also benefit from interprofessional learning opportunities alongside learners from other healthcare disciplines. During Stage Two, students continue to develop their expertise through Placement 3 and advanced study of contemporary occupational therapy practice. The Public, Global and Community Health module explores wider health issues and the role of occupational therapy in promoting population wellbeing, while Professional Reasoning and Professional Identity develops critical thinking, decision-making and leadership skills necessary for professional practice. The programme concludes with an Independent Scholarship project, enabling students to investigate an area of occupational therapy that aligns with their interests and career aspirations while developing advanced research and analytical skills.
