COURSE CURRICULUM

This two-year accelerated Mental Health Nursing programme is designed for graduates with a previous degree and relevant experience in a service user setting who wish to become registered Mental Health Nurses. Approved against the Nursing and Midwifery Council's Future Nurse: Standards of Proficiency for Registered Nurses, the course prepares students for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council upon successful completion. The programme equips students with the knowledge, practical skills and professional values needed to provide compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, dementia, eating disorders and postnatal mental health challenges. Built around the principle that everyone deserves access to high-quality care regardless of their circumstances, the course develops confident, resilient and adaptable nurses capable of supporting people to maximise their wellbeing and quality of life. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of mental health nursing across the lifespan while developing compassionate professionalism and effective communication skills through classroom learning, practical skills sessions, online education and technology-enhanced teaching methods. Practice learning forms 50 percent of the programme in accordance with national professional standards and includes a wide range of placements across healthcare and community settings, enabling students to apply theory to practice while participating in twenty-four-hour care delivery. Throughout placements, students receive guidance from experienced Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors who support their professional development and clinical learning. The programme also includes extensive use of simulation activities to help students build confidence before entering clinical environments. Students benefit from excellent facilities, including modern clinical skills suites, replica wards and immersive learning environments, while interprofessional learning opportunities encourage collaboration with students from other healthcare disciplines. Supported by experienced and research-active academic staff who remain closely involved in clinical practice, graduates are prepared to become skilled, compassionate and transformational mental health nurses ready to meet the changing needs of modern healthcare services.
