COURSE CURRICULUM

The two-year midwifery programme provides registered adult nurses with a structured pathway to develop the specialist knowledge, clinical skills and professional competencies required for autonomous midwifery practice. During the first year, students are introduced to the core principles and foundations of contemporary midwifery care, gaining an understanding of the midwife's role as an independent practitioner responsible for supporting women and families throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. The Antenatal Care and Public Health in Contemporary Midwifery Practice module explores maternal health, health promotion and the importance of public health initiatives in improving outcomes for mothers and babies. Students also study Facilitating Normal Childbirth, which focuses on supporting physiological labour and birth while developing practical skills for safe and effective maternity care. The Principles of Postnatal and Neonatal Care module provides knowledge of caring for mothers and newborn infants during the postnatal period, while Clinical Practice One enables students to apply theoretical learning within real healthcare settings through supervised clinical placements. Throughout the first year, students begin case loading activities and develop an understanding of continuity of care and relationship-based practice. In the second year, students build upon these foundations by developing the expertise required to manage more complex clinical situations involving mothers and babies with additional needs or uncommon medical conditions. The Management of Obstetric Emergencies and Complications of Childbirth module prepares students to recognise and respond to complex maternity situations and obstetric emergencies while maintaining safe and effective care. The Independent Review of Midwifery Practice module encourages critical reflection, evidence-based practice and professional development, while Clinical Practice Two provides further placement opportunities across a range of healthcare settings where students can integrate theory with practice. By the end of the programme, graduates possess the confidence and competence required for professional midwifery registration and practice.
