COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Medical Ultrasound programme offers a flexible and professionally focused pathway designed to support healthcare practitioners in developing advanced knowledge and clinical expertise in ultrasound practice. The course is structured over three stages, each comprising 60 credits, allowing students to tailor their studies to their professional interests and clinical specialisms. During Stage One, students complete the core Principles of Medical Ultrasound module, which introduces the fundamental physics, scientific principles and technology that underpin modern ultrasound imaging and diagnostic practice. Alongside this compulsory module, students select two optional modules, with at least one being a clinical ultrasound module, enabling early specialisation in areas relevant to their professional roles. In Stage Two, students undertake a further 60 credits, including a minimum of 20 credits from clinical ultrasound modules, while the remaining credits can be selected from either specialist clinical options or broader professional development modules. The programme offers a wide range of clinical ultrasound pathways including obstetric, gynaecology, early pregnancy assessment, vascular, general medical, musculoskeletal, head and neck and interventional ultrasound, allowing students to build expertise in specific areas of clinical practice. Students may also undertake focused specialist ultrasound modules tailored to their professional requirements and workplace settings. Generic modules further enhance professional capabilities through study in areas such as advanced communication, technology, evidence-based practice, research methodologies, work-based learning and advancing professional practice. The final stage of the programme includes the Independent Scholarship module, providing students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial research or practice-focused project within an area of professional interest. Through this combination of specialist clinical training, academic study and independent research, the programme prepares graduates for advanced practice roles, leadership responsibilities and continued professional development within the rapidly evolving field of medical ultrasound.
