COURSE CURRICULUM

Advanced Musculoskeletal Science is a core module that develops advanced knowledge and clinical skills in the assessment, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions using a biopsychosocial and evidence-based approach. The module focuses on spinal, upper limb, and lower limb conditions encountered in both sporting and clinical settings, helping students strengthen their clinical reasoning and decision-making abilities. Students critically evaluate their existing assessment and management approaches while extending their expertise into new anatomical regions, sporting populations, or areas of professional practice. Through patient-centred and athlete-centred rehabilitation planning, the module encourages the integration of neuromuscular, holistic, and functional approaches to care, including the management of temporary and permanent disabilities, chronic pain, and complex co-existing conditions. Emphasis is placed on advanced subjective and objective assessment techniques, enabling students to generate and test clinical hypotheses that support accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. The module also develops skills in recognising and differentiating neurovascular conditions and their presentations within musculoskeletal practice. Students learn to design and implement personalised rehabilitation programmes informed by current research, professional guidelines, and best practice principles. Communication and collaboration within multidisciplinary teams form an important aspect of learning, alongside the development of leadership, mentorship, and educational skills. Opportunities are provided to supervise undergraduate learners within clinical environments and contribute to educational activities, reinforcing professional growth through teaching and collaboration. Reflective practice is embedded throughout the module, encouraging students to evaluate their strengths, identify areas for improvement, and adapt their practice to meet the needs of diverse populations, including para-athletes and individuals with complex rehabilitation requirements. Overall, the module prepares students for advanced roles in musculoskeletal rehabilitation and sport and exercise medicine.
