COURSE CURRICULUM
The Independent Studies module provides students with the opportunity to undertake a substantial master's-level research project focused on a significant issue within policing, criminology, or the wider criminal justice sector. Students identify and propose a realistic research topic that addresses a contemporary challenge relevant to professional practice, policy, or organisational development. Under the guidance of an Independent Studies Supervisor, they plan and conduct a systematic research project by critically reviewing relevant academic literature, evaluating existing theories, and selecting appropriate research methods to investigate their chosen topic. Throughout the module, students develop advanced skills in independent research, critical analysis, project planning, problem-solving, and evidence-based decision-making while applying rigorous academic standards to produce meaningful and reliable findings. A key feature of the module is the application of "What Works" principles, encouraging students to evaluate evidence critically and develop practical recommendations that can improve policing, criminal justice practice, or organisational performance. Students analyse research findings, draw well-supported conclusions, and present actionable recommendations aimed at addressing real-world challenges faced by police forces and criminal justice organisations. Continuous supervision and academic support are provided throughout every stage of the project, from refining the research question and reviewing the literature to analysing results and presenting the final dissertation. The completed research project demonstrates the student's ability to conduct independent scholarly investigation, communicate complex ideas effectively, and contribute evidence-based insights to contemporary policing and criminal justice issues. Overall, the module represents the culmination of the MSc programme, enabling students to showcase their research capability, professional expertise, and critical thinking while producing a high-quality dissertation that supports both career progression and the advancement of knowledge within the policing and criminal justice professions.
