COURSE CURRICULUM
The Leading, Managing and Developing People module is a 20-credit core component of the MSc Human Resource Management programme that develops the knowledge, skills, and professional capabilities required to lead, manage, and develop people effectively in modern organisations. The module recognises that managers and leaders play a crucial role in creating productive, ethical, and high-performing workplaces, and therefore focuses on the strategic principles of people management, leadership, and human resource management. Students explore key concepts and contemporary practices in HRM and human resource development (HRD), examining how effective leadership and people management contribute to organisational performance, employee engagement, and long-term business success. The curriculum develops an understanding of people management from a strategic perspective, enabling students to evaluate how HR policies, leadership approaches, and workforce development initiatives support organisational objectives within dynamic and rapidly changing business environments. Students also examine the employment relationship, considering the responsibilities of managers and HR professionals in fostering positive workplace cultures, supporting employee wellbeing, and managing organisational change. A strong emphasis is placed on ethical leadership, professional practice, and critical reflection, encouraging students to evaluate management theories and HR practices while considering their practical application in real organisational contexts. Through coursework, students analyse contemporary leadership challenges, assess people management strategies, and develop evidence-based recommendations that demonstrate both academic understanding and professional judgement. The module strengthens essential transferable skills including strategic thinking, decision-making, communication, leadership, critical analysis, problem-solving, and reflective practice, preparing students to manage diverse teams and respond effectively to complex organisational issues. By integrating current research, professional standards, and practical HR applications, the module provides a comprehensive foundation for leadership and people management in a wide range of organisational settings. Overall, the Leading, Managing and Developing People module equips students with the strategic insight, ethical awareness, and professional competence required to lead individuals and teams, develop talent, enhance organisational performance, and contribute effectively to modern human resource management and leadership practice.
