COURSE CURRICULUM

The Professional Forensic Scientist module develops the advanced professional, technical, and employability skills required for modern forensic science practice while providing students with the opportunity to explore specialist areas aligned with their individual research interests. Worth 20 credits, this core module examines the legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of forensic practitioners, enabling students to understand the investigative process and the standards required for the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of forensic evidence. Students study current forensic research, police protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), criminal law, and the Streamlined Forensic Reporting (SFR) system to develop a critical understanding of how forensic investigations are conducted within contemporary criminal justice systems. The module explores essential professional issues including quality assurance, laboratory accreditation, ethics, data protection, conflict of interest, and the legal obligations associated with forensic practice. Students critically evaluate modern approaches, techniques, and methodologies used in the examination of different types of forensic evidence while learning how to select and apply appropriate investigative procedures to realistic case scenarios. Emphasis is placed on assessing the suitability of analytical techniques, designing and conducting case-related experiments, and using evidence-based approaches to interpret complex scientific findings accurately and objectively.
