COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Environmental Management (Land and Water Contamination) curriculum combines specialist core modules with a range of optional subjects that allow students to tailor their studies to specific environmental interests and career goals. Core modules include Contaminated Land and Remediation, which examines the sources, impacts, assessment, prevention, management, and remediation of land contamination to support sustainable environmental practices; Freshwater Management, which explores water quality, pollution sources, contaminant behaviour, and the management of rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, groundwater, and drinking water systems; and Independent Scholarly Activity, where students undertake an independent research project by developing a research proposal, applying appropriate scientific methodologies, collecting and analysing data, and presenting evidence-based conclusions on a specialist environmental topic. Students can further enhance their expertise by selecting from a range of optional modules, including Employability and Placement, which provides professional skills development and a 100-hour placement or live industry project; Ecological Surveying, covering habitat surveys, GPS surveying, GIS mapping, and ecological classification techniques; Analytical Methods for Ecologists, introducing statistical analysis, multivariate techniques, and the use of R software for environmental data analysis; Climate Change, focusing on the causes, impacts, adaptation, and mitigation of climate change; Environmental Impact Assessment, which develops knowledge of environmental assessment techniques and global EIA practice; International Environmental Policy and Law, exploring international agreements and environmental legislation; Flood Risk Engineering Management, examining flood risk analysis, hydraulic modelling, and flood management strategies; and Global Energy Challenges, which evaluates conventional and renewable energy sources, environmental impacts, sustainability, and future global energy needs. Together, these modules develop advanced scientific knowledge, environmental management expertise, research capability, technical proficiency, and professional skills, preparing graduates for careers in environmental consultancy, contaminated land management, water resource management, ecological assessment, environmental regulation, sustainability, conservation, and related sectors while providing a strong foundation for professional accreditation and further research.
