COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Economics and International Business at the University of Derby equips students with advanced knowledge of global economics, international trade, and business strategy while developing the analytical and leadership skills needed to succeed in multinational organisations, financial institutions, consultancy firms, government agencies, and international enterprises. Throughout the course, students explore how global markets, international trade, financial systems, sustainability, regulation, and geopolitical developments shape business strategy and economic decision-making. A key module, Mergers and Acquisitions, provides a strategic understanding of corporate growth, restructuring, and financial management by examining how mergers, acquisitions, and strategic alliances contribute to organisational development and shareholder value. Students critically evaluate different types of mergers, including horizontal, vertical, related, conglomerate, and cross-border acquisitions, while exploring corporate valuation, financing methods, acquisition strategies, regulatory frameworks, antitrust legislation, takeover processes, and the role of advisors in merger transactions. The module also examines organisational behaviour, governance, psychological factors, post-acquisition integration, organisational learning, and the challenges of managing complex international business transformations. Across the programme, students strengthen their quantitative, analytical, research, and policy evaluation skills through case studies, live projects, and applied learning activities while developing cultural intelligence, global awareness, ethical decision-making, and sustainable leadership capabilities. An independent dissertation enables students to investigate a contemporary issue in economics or international business, applying advanced research methods and critical analysis to real-world challenges.
