COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Economics and Finance at the University of Derby provides advanced knowledge of economics, finance, and quantitative analysis, equipping students with the analytical and technical skills required for careers in banking, investment, consultancy, government, financial services, and policy analysis. A key component of the programme is the Data Analytics module, which develops specialist skills in collecting, managing, analysing, and interpreting complex economic and business datasets for policy assessment and strategic decision-making. Students learn to work with survey, administrative, and unstructured data using spreadsheets, econometric software, and statistical packages while applying quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques, data visualisation, predictive analytics, time series forecasting, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to generate meaningful insights. The module also introduces causal analysis, enabling students to evaluate relationships within data and make informed policy recommendations. Ethical and legal considerations, including data privacy, bias, responsible AI use, and governance, are integrated throughout the curriculum to ensure responsible and sustainable analytical practice. Through applied projects, research methods training, and an independent dissertation, students strengthen their research, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while investigating a specialist topic in economics or finance.
