COURSE CURRICULUM

The Independent Study module provides students with the opportunity to undertake an academically rigorous and systematic investigation into a significant topic of their choice that is directly relevant to the field of professional investigation. Drawing upon the knowledge, analytical abilities, and research skills developed throughout the MSc programme, students design and complete a substantial master's-level dissertation under the guidance of an experienced supervisor from the programme's team of specialist researchers. Throughout the module, students identify a relevant research problem, conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature, develop an appropriate research methodology, collect and critically analyse evidence, and present well-supported conclusions that contribute to professional understanding and investigative practice. The research process encourages independent learning, critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and the application of advanced investigative techniques to complex real-world issues. Students also benefit from the extensive professional experience of the academic team, enabling them to explore topics that are closely aligned with current investigative challenges across sectors such as law enforcement, financial investigation, health and safety, social services, and regulatory organisations.
