COURSE CURRICULUM

The Independent Scholarly Activity module provides students with the opportunity to undertake an in-depth, research-based investigation that applies the knowledge and skills gained throughout the MSc Conservation Biology programme. Students develop advanced research competencies by identifying a specialist topic of interest, designing an appropriate research proposal, and conducting an independent study within a defined timeframe. The module places strong emphasis on developing essential research skills, including literature review, research design, data collection, data analysis, critical evaluation, and ethical research practice. Throughout the project, students are encouraged to demonstrate initiative, creative thinking, problem-solving, and effective project management while applying appropriate scientific methods to investigate real-world conservation or environmental issues. Under academic supervision, students critically interpret their findings, relate them to current scientific knowledge, and present evidence-based conclusions through a substantial research dissertation. This independent research experience strengthens analytical, communication, and organisational skills while preparing graduates for professional roles in conservation, environmental management, ecological consultancy, research organisations, and further postgraduate study.
