The MSc Biomedical Science curriculum combines advanced core modules with specialist options to develop professional competence, research expertise, and in-depth scientific knowledge across key areas of biomedical science. Core modules include Professional Skills in Biomedical Science, which develops essential competencies in laboratory governance, quality management, biomedical informatics, leadership, bioethics, evidence-based healthcare, research ethics, regulatory frameworks, and professional development while strengthening critical thinking, lifelong learning, and management skills. Applied Microbial Biotechnology explores advanced applications of microbiology and biotechnology in healthcare, diagnostics, and biomedical research, while Research Methods and Data Interpretation equips students with advanced research design, experimental methodologies, statistical analysis, data interpretation, and scientific communication skills required for postgraduate research. Current Issues in Biomedical Science examines emerging developments, innovations, and contemporary challenges in biomedical science, encouraging students to critically evaluate current research and advances in healthcare. The Research Project provides an opportunity to undertake an independent investigation on a specialist biomedical topic, enabling students to apply advanced laboratory techniques, analyse complex scientific data, and produce a substantial research dissertation under academic supervision. Students can further specialise by selecting one of three optional modules: Clinical Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, focusing on blood disorders, diagnostic techniques, blood transfusion practices, and laboratory investigations; Applied Immunology, covering immune system function, immunological disorders, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic approaches; or Advanced Cellular Pathology, which develops expertise in disease mechanisms, cellular pathology, histopathology, and advanced diagnostic technologies. Throughout the programme, students develop advanced laboratory, analytical, research, communication, and professional skills while gaining experience with modern biomedical techniques and evidence-based practice. The curriculum prepares graduates for careers in clinical laboratories, biomedical research, healthcare science, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, diagnostic services, academic research, and related sectors, while also providing a strong foundation for doctoral study and continued professional development.
