The MSc Advanced Engineering Materials programme includes a range of specialised modules designed to develop advanced technical knowledge and research capabilities in modern materials engineering. The Research Methods and Engineering Project module enables students to strengthen their research skills by applying advanced methodologies to both taught subjects and an independent postgraduate research project in a chosen area of interest. The Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Processes module explores both established and emerging materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, alongside their manufacturing techniques and applications in areas such as nanomaterials, surface coatings, high entropy alloys, energy generation and electricity storage, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and zero-carbon technologies. The Theory of Elasticity and Advanced Computational Models module introduces the principles of continuum mechanics and elasticity while providing practical experience in solving structural problems using analytical methods and advanced computational tools such as finite element analysis software. Students develop expertise in modelling, simulation, result interpretation and engineering analysis. The Design of Structures with Advanced Materials module integrates materials science and structural engineering principles to address real-world applications in transportation and high-technology industries, including aircraft structures, sports car frames and small modular nuclear reactors. Through theoretical and numerical studies, students gain a thorough understanding of materials selection and structural design processes. The Multiscale Material Modelling module focuses on understanding material behaviour across different length and time scales, from atomic structures to large-scale engineering applications. Students learn advanced modelling techniques, computational algorithms and software tools used to develop constitutive material relationships and predict material performance, equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to solve complex engineering challenges in research and industry.
