COURSE CURRICULUM

The Studying at Masters Level and Research Methods module equips students with the advanced research knowledge and practical skills required for postgraduate study, professional practice, and academic investigation. It provides a comprehensive introduction to qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research, enabling students to understand how different research approaches can be applied to solve complex problems in industry and academia. Throughout the module, students learn how to identify important gaps in existing literature, critically evaluate published research, and develop well-structured, ethical, and methodologically sound research proposals. Emphasis is placed on selecting the most appropriate research methods for specific research questions, ensuring that investigations are both rigorous and relevant. Students gain practical experience with a wide range of qualitative techniques, including interviews, focus groups, user testing, ethnography, and case studies, while also developing expertise in quantitative methods such as descriptive analysis, experimental and quasi-experimental research, ex post facto analysis, and correlational analysis. The module also demonstrates how qualitative and quantitative approaches can be effectively integrated through mixed-methods research to produce richer and more comprehensive findings. In addition to research methodology, students learn the essential components of producing a high-quality academic research paper, including writing effective introductions and abstracts, conducting critical literature reviews, designing appropriate methodologies, analysing and interpreting research findings, identifying opportunities for future research, and compiling accurate academic references and bibliographies. By the end of the module, students will be able to conduct systematic literature reviews, critically assess current knowledge, design and justify suitable research methodologies, and develop detailed research plans capable of addressing real-world academic and professional challenges. Worth 20 credits, this core module establishes a strong foundation for independent scholarship, analytical thinking, evidence-based decision-making, and the successful completion of postgraduate research projects while preparing graduates to become research-led, inquiry-driven professionals capable of contributing meaningful knowledge and innovative solutions within their chosen fields.
