COURSE CURRICULUM

The Quantitative Skills for Health and Care Research module provides students with advanced knowledge and practical expertise in the design, analysis and interpretation of quantitative research within nursing, midwifery and wider healthcare settings. As a core component of the MRes Health and Care programme, the module develops essential research skills that support evidence-based practice and contribute to the improvement of patient care and healthcare services. Students explore a wide range of quantitative research methodologies, including randomised controlled trials, experimental study designs and other quantitative approaches commonly used in health and care research. The module examines the strengths, limitations and appropriate application of different research designs, enabling students to critically evaluate their suitability for addressing complex clinical and professional questions. Students gain an understanding of different forms of quantitative data and develop the analytical skills required to interpret research findings using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. Key topics include hypothesis testing, sampling strategies, statistical power, randomisation procedures and blinding methods used in experimental research to improve validity and reliability. The module also considers the philosophical foundations that underpin quantitative research and explores how these influence the collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Students learn how to critically appraise published research, communicate findings effectively within scientific reports and assess the significance and implications of research outcomes for nursing and midwifery practice. In addition, the module encourages reflection on individual learning needs and supports the ongoing development of quantitative research capabilities to promote lifelong professional growth. By combining theoretical understanding with practical analytical skills, the module prepares students to design robust quantitative studies, evaluate healthcare interventions and contribute to high-quality research that informs clinical decision-making, advances professional knowledge and improves outcomes for patients, families and healthcare organisations.
