COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Psychology programme provides advanced training in research methods and analytical techniques designed to prepare students for professional research careers and doctoral study. Students begin by studying Advanced Qualitative Analysis for Psychology, which develops sophisticated skills in the collection, interpretation and evaluation of qualitative data using a range of contemporary methodologies commonly applied within psychological research. This module enables students to critically explore human experiences, behaviours and social processes while developing expertise in rigorous qualitative analysis techniques. Alongside this, the Advanced Quantitative Analysis for Psychology module equips students with advanced statistical knowledge and practical skills for managing, analysing and interpreting quantitative data, allowing them to confidently undertake complex data analysis and evaluate empirical findings across a variety of psychological contexts. The Philosophy of Science in Psychology module provides an in-depth understanding of the philosophical foundations that underpin psychological research, encouraging students to critically examine the assumptions, theories and scientific principles that shape the discipline and influence research design and interpretation. Through Conducting Psychological Research in the 21st Century, students explore contemporary issues, innovations and challenges associated with modern research practice, including ethical considerations, technological developments and evolving approaches to evidence generation and dissemination. The Methodological Strategies for Reviewing Contemporary Research module develops students' ability to systematically identify, evaluate and synthesise existing literature, equipping them with the skills required to conduct comprehensive and critical reviews that inform future research and professional practice. The programme culminates in the Independent Research project, which provides students with the opportunity to design and conduct a substantial original study within an area of psychology that reflects their professional interests and career aspirations. This major research project enables students to apply advanced methodologies, analytical techniques and critical thinking skills while preparing them for careers in research and progression to doctoral study.
