COURSE CURRICULUM

The MRes Leadership and Management is designed to support a gradual progression towards independent research by combining structured learning with practical, real-world research experience. The programme begins with taught modules that introduce students to advanced research methodologies, subject-specific theory, and academic research skills before progressing to smaller, research-focused masterclasses that encourage critical discussion, independent thinking, and specialist knowledge development. The course culminates in a supervised Independent Research Project, delivered online through individual and group supervision, allowing students to investigate a topic relevant to their chosen specialism while applying advanced research techniques to real organisational challenges. Teaching is delivered through a blend of interactive lectures, seminars, workshops, masterclasses, practical software training, and hands-on learning activities using industry-standard research tools such as NVivo and SPSS. Learning is further supported through Blackboard Ultra, online discussion forums, asynchronous learning resources, video tutorials, Develop@Derby, and LinkedIn Learning, providing students with flexible access to study materials and additional professional development opportunities. Continuous formative assessment and regular feedback help students monitor their progress, refine their research skills, and remain fully engaged throughout the programme. Alongside advanced research capabilities, the course places a strong emphasis on developing highly transferable professional skills, including critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem-solving, communication, project management, financial planning, and risk assessment. This combination of structured teaching, practical research experience, digital learning resources, and personalised academic supervision prepares graduates for leadership positions, consultancy, policy development, organisational research, doctoral study, and research-intensive careers across public, private, and international organisations.
