COURSE CURRICULUM
The MRes Health and Care (Public Health) programme provides advanced research training through a series of specialist modules designed to develop the skills required for high-quality public health research and evidence-based practice. Core modules include Quantitative Skills for Health and Care Research, Qualitative Skills for Health and Care Research, Principles of Public Health, Public Health Epidemiology and Statistics, and the Independent Research Project for Health and Care. Students may also choose optional modules such as Evidence Based Health and Care Practice Project and Ethical and Scientific Standards for Health and Care Research to further strengthen their research capabilities and understanding of ethical practice. The Quantitative Skills for Health and Care Research module forms an essential part of the programme by equipping students with advanced knowledge of quantitative research methodologies and analytical techniques commonly used in health and public health research. Students develop an understanding of a wide range of research designs including randomised controlled trials, experimental studies and other quantitative approaches used to evaluate healthcare interventions and public health initiatives. The module examines the strengths and limitations of different study designs and enables students to critically appraise quantitative evidence and assess its relevance to professional practice and policy development. Students learn to analyse and interpret quantitative data using descriptive and inferential statistical methods while exploring concepts such as hypothesis testing, sampling strategies, statistical power, randomisation and blinding techniques that contribute to robust and reliable research outcomes. The philosophical foundations of quantitative methodologies are also considered to enhance understanding of how research paradigms influence data collection, analysis and interpretation. In addition, the module develops skills in reporting scientific findings and communicating research outcomes effectively within professional settings. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own research development needs and plan for the continued growth of their quantitative research skills, preparing them to undertake independent research projects and contribute to improvements in public health policy, services and population health outcomes.
